Project Description

ALLERGY INHALATION
ALLERGY TO AIRBORNE SUBSTANCES

A lot of people have vague, general and persistent complaints such as sneezing, sniveling, fatigue, diarrhea, abdominal pain, stomach discomfort, itching….Very often an allergy or intolerance is the cause.

We offer you the opportunity to have yourself tested by a blood test for allergy to airborne substances (inhalation allergy). This way you will know if it is necessary to avoid certain substances or if persistent symptoms can be explained.

Usually the result of this test is known within 5 working days.
The test is done on blood. You do not need to be sober for this.

We test for the 9 most common airborne substance allergies in Belgium

  • House dust mite

  • Cat and dog

  • Plants: timothy, mugwort, plantain

  • Trees: birch and hazel

  • Most common fungi

How do I prepare?

The optimal time for blood collection is inthe morning after bed rest and overnight fasting. Fasting means not eating and drinking only water after 10 p.m. the night before.

Not being sober mainly affects the determination of substances resorbed from the diet as such (glucose, triglycerides, etc.). Indirectly, lipemic samples (elevated triglycerides) can technically interfere with the determinations. A number of parameters (e.g., iron, phosphate, cortisol) also show fluctuations during the day.

What is intolerance?

In intolerance, the body reacts unusually to a certain substance, while the same substance usually causes no particular reaction in others. The immune system is not involved in this reaction.

Among other things, one can be intolerant to medications, to alcohol or to certain foods. The latter is referred to as food intolerance or non-allergic food hypersensitivity.

What is an allergy?

Allergy is something completely different. This involves your own immune system reacting to foreign substances (allergens) with which it comes into contact as if it were a dangerous intruder. These allergens in themselves need not be harmful at all. Examples include pollen grains, animal dander, dust mite droppings, mold spores or food ingredients. Allergens enter the body primarily through the skin and through the respiratory tract.

In a food allergy, they enter through the gastrointestinal system. The body then produces IgE antibodies, which try to render these allergens harmless through the blood with a sometimes “exaggerated” allergic reaction.

The symptoms (runny nose, watering eyes, itching, shortness of breath, diarrhea) are not from the allergen itself, but from the immune system’s reaction to the allergen. In hay fever, symptoms occur when various plants come into bloom.

House dust mite allergy often involves sneezing or a stuffy nose when you wake up in the morning.

The inhalation allergy blood test tests IgE antibodies to the 9 most common inhalation allergies in Belgium:

  • House dust mite (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus)

  • Epithelium of cat

  • Hair and dander of dog

  • Timothy (Phleum pratense)

  • Birch (Betula verrucosa)

  • Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris)

  • Mixture of fungi (Penicillium notatum, Cladosporium herbarum, Aspergillus fumigatus, Alternaria alternata)

  • Hazel (Corylus avellana)

  • Plantain (Plantago lanceolata)

In addition, total IgE is also determined. Many allergies are in fact caused by IgE antibodies, which are specifically directed against the substance(s) against which one reacts, thus triggering the allergic reaction.
