Hair analysis can be used to determine over a longer period of time whether there was drug or alcohol use. Drugs, medication and alcohol enter the bloodstream and pass through the hair cells, causing traces to be found in the hair follicles.

How is the taking of hair performed?

You must not cut your hair (yourself), and you should avoid cosmetic treatments prior to the appointment and/or inform us of any such treatments on the day of the sample collection.

A strand of hair at least 3 cm long (preferably longer) and about the thickness of a pencil is taken from the crown of the head. If the hair is not long or thick enough, our staff member may refuse the appointment.

Hair loss may have a visible effect on your hairstyle, which you agree to upon making the advance payment and on the day of the procedure.

Based on an average hair growth rate of 1 cm per month, a 3-cm strand of hair provides insight into approximately 3 months of use (or abstinence). An analysis covering up to 6 cm—or approximately 6 months—is possible.

The exact growth rate of your own hair (ranging from 0.7 to 1.4 cm/month) may differ from this, so the time frame remains an estimate. Different phases of hair growth can affect measurements. You should take this into account when analyzing results based on the date of your last use, if applicable.

A positive result indicates that drug use has occurred, but does not specify exactly when it took place within the specified period corresponding to a hair length of 3, 4, 5, or up to 6 cm.
