CARDIOVASCULAR RISK FACTORS
METABOLIC SYNDROME

€ 125

The risk factors for cardiovascular disease are now well known.
Cardiovascular disease has been the No. 1 cause of death in Western countries for many years.

Fortunately, you can protect against it through a healthy lifestyle: plenty of exercise, no smoking, normal blood pressure and good control of sugar and fat levels in the blood.

Through this test panel you can have the most important risk factors in your blood tested. This way you can follow up year after year whether you are doing well, and make adjustments where necessary.

You must be sober for the blood draw.

How do I prepare?

The optimal time for blood collection is inthe morning after bed rest and overnight fasting. Fasting means not eating and drinking only water after 10 p.m. the night before.

Not being sober mainly affects the determination of substances resorbed from the diet as such (glucose, triglycerides, etc.). Indirectly, lipemic samples (elevated triglycerides) can technically interfere with the determinations. A number of parameters (e.g., iron, phosphate, cortisol) also show fluctuations during the day.

The test panel measures about 20 key parameters that together give an excellent picture of your cardiovascular fitness:

  • Total cholesterol

  • HDL cholesterol

  • LDL cholesterol

  • ratio HDL/Tot. Cholesterol

  • non-HDL cholesterol

  • triglycerides

  • LpA

  • creatinine

  • eGFR

  • CRP

  • glucose (sober)

  • HbA1c

  • Vitamin B12

  • C-peptide

  • ferritin

  • GGT

  • ALT

  • AST

The panel, of course, includes a comprehensive analysis of all the important fats in the blood. In addition to good (HDL) and bad (LDL) cholesterol, their ratio and the amount of triglycerides also play an important role. The bilan is completed with measurement of lipoprotein A (LpA) which is also elevated in people who develop arteriosclerosis.

Obesity and aging go hand in hand and cause disturbed sugar levels: more and more people thus develop type 2 diabetes, in which the body develops a deficiency of the insulin hormone. This progresses very slowly and is easily treatable at an early stage through healthy diet, adequate exercise and medication. Tackling it in time is the message because misunderstood diabetes damages your kidneys, eyes, nerves and blood vessels.
Through this test panel, we examine your fasting sugar level. This is usually a good and simple indicator of diabetes.

In addition, we also measure the amount of glycosylated hemoglobin: the glycosylated hemoglobin HbA1c is like a memory of your sugar balance. If it is elevated, it indicates excessive sugar levels in the months preceding the blood draw, even if your blood sugar levels were normal at the time of the draw.

Finally, we also measure C-peptide: this is a piece that is split off from the insulin hormone, and the blood levels perfectly reflect the amount of insulin the body can still produce. Too low C-peptide indicates impaired function of the insulin-producing cells, too much in turn indicates impaired action of the insulin hormone (insulin resistance) due to fat accumulation in the tissues.

We also examine kidney function (creatinine, eGFR), liver health (AST, ALT, GGT), any deficiencies in vitamin B12 and iron stores (ferritin). Finally, we also check more generally to see if infection or inflammation is present in the body.

Through this panel, you can thus estimate your risk for metabolic syndrome. This is a collective term for the conditions that result from high blood pressure, too much fat around the abdomen and disturbed amounts of fats in the blood.

You are diagnosed with metabolic syndrome if you have 3 or more of the parameters below:

  • Abdominal circumference greater than 102 cm for men and 88 cm for women

  • Triglycerides ≥ 150 mg/dL

  • HDL cholesterol lower than 40 mg/dL for men and 50 mg/dL for women

  • Blood pressure ≥130/≥85 mm Hg

  • Fasting glucose level ≥ 110 mg/dL

All tests are conducted in collaboration with doctors and specialists from AZ Delta.
