Project Description

ALLERGY FOOD
allergy to specific nutrients

€ 205

This panel screens for the most common food allergies. IgE antibodies are detected against the 7 most frequent food allergens in Belgium in adults and children older than 3 years.

Usually the result of this test is known within 5 days.
The test is done on blood. You do not need to be sober for this.

How do I prepare?

The optimal time for blood collection is inthe morning after bed rest and overnight fasting. Fasting means not eating and drinking only water after 10 p.m. the night before.

Not being sober mainly affects the determination of substances resorbed from the diet as such (glucose, triglycerides, etc.). Indirectly, lipemic samples (elevated triglycerides) can technically interfere with the determinations. A number of parameters (e.g., iron, phosphate, cortisol) also show fluctuations during the day.

There are two forms of food hypersensitivity.

Food intolerance refers to non-allergic food hypersensitivity. The most well-known example is gluten intolerance, in which the body reacts abnormally to the gliadin protein in numerous cereal products. If you want to know more about this, check out the test panel Gluten Intolerance.

The other form of food hypersensitivity is called food allergy. When the body’s immune system overreacts to a substance entering the body it is called an allergic reaction. Allergic reactions can be very severe and sometimes even fatal. Abnormalities in the immune system cause the body to react extra violently to certain specific substances. Food allergy involves reactions to food substances that are eaten or drunk.

Through this panel, we screen for the most common food allergies.

IgE antibodies are detected against the 7 most frequent food allergens in Belgium in adults and children older than 3 years. Birch allergy is also screened for because many food allergies in Europe involve so-called cross reactions between birch pollen and certain fruits and vegetables. Birch pollen contains the “bet v1” allergen. This is a PR10 protein also found in plant foods. The immune system of someone allergic to birch pollen sometimes cannot distinguish between birch pollen and the foods. As a result, an allergic reaction also occurs. These reactions are usually quite mild and limited to itching in the mouth that disappears spontaneously within 30 minutes. This is called the “oral allergy syndrome.” People with oral allergy syndrome can usually tolerate the foods to which they react when warmed.

Complaints

Symptoms that occur with a food allergy can be very diverse: itchy bumps (urticaria) and red spots, itching in the mouth, swelling of lips or throat, nausea, vomiting, cramps, diarrhea. In severe allergic reactions to food, blood pressure may drop and anaphylactic shock may even occur; this is a medical emergency!

The allergens tested for in this food panel are:

  • White of egg (egg white)

  • Cow’s Milk

  • Fish (cod)

  • Wheat

  • Peanut

  • Soy

  • Hazelnut

  • Birch

  • rBet v1 PR10

In addition, total IgE is also determined. This is because many allergies are caused by IgE antibodies, which are specifically directed against the substance(s) against which one reacts, thus triggering the allergic reaction.

All tests are conducted in collaboration with doctors and specialists from AZ Delta.
